Go ahead and fill in those last 3 or 4 cubic inches of empty space with caulk and spray foam. It really cleans up the engine bay and doesn’t make anything harder to work on than it already is.

Oh you would know if it wasnt. lol power would come on a little later (3k~ish) but continue all the way to 6k. Mine was an MTM stage 3 (of 4), so it was full exhaust/bigger intercoolers & some more fuel. My butt dyno said I was in the low to mid 300s to the wheels. When it was just stage 2 It dyno’d 287/315 to the wheels, so my estimates are pretty accurate LOL, or at least if felt so.

Apr is cool, pricy, you can find a tuned ecu second hand for 300ish. (id sell you mine but you would need a 5 bar fuel preasure regulator, and the supporting mods like the exhaust etc.)
I would stick to the stock DVs, everything this else is a gimick, the 710n DVs are usued in Porsche GT2s and up. Why? Cause they’re cheap, light**, durable, did I mention cheap? And the 2.7 has a system that manages the DVs so they’re far less “knee-jerk” mechanical and more variable based on throtle input/demand (
n249 pump
)
Ah, I love that motor...I would say I almost know it through and through.

Oil cooler! (I have a spare sandwich plate adapter if you want it), intercoolers (
SRM is best bang for buck
), and ehxuast (not sure what the used market is for C5s, but B5s were cheap enough, 500 for a cat back).
Aside from that, drive train enhancements make a huge difference, snub mount (034 caged is the best), motor mounts (street density, 034), transmission mounts (034), diff mounts and carrier. I never did the sub frame, but that would further tighten things up. Oh, and sway bars, I had Hotchkiss front and rear. I would start with the mounts and bushings, that would cost you about $500, and well worth the effort for the dramatic improvement you will feel, less slop means more power is making it to the wheels.
Also brakes! 17z calipers off a q7/touareg bolt right up to the spindle, and will greatly impove brakeing, along with SSlines. You can find calipers for 3-400 used, and the rotors arent that much either.
This is a slippery slope so be careful. lol

I’d be happy to. Mine is a late-build 2001 S4, 6-speed, brilliant black exterior, with the black leather and off-white (“silver”) alcantara inserts on the seats and doors. It has the cold weather package (I live in Buffalo, so that was a necessity haha) and the sport package (with the aluminum dashboard/door trim, and mirrors) and I think every option available except navigation, which is how I wanted it because I personally love the center stack/radio/climate control layout. The whole interior in general is a huge part of the reason I love these cars so much; very nice-looking, and comfortable, with well placed, controls (world’s better interior quality than the other AWD performance sedans that it is often cross shopped with, STi and Evo).
I bought the car back in 2013 after I graduated from college and started my career. I had been lusting for one for well over five years by that point, but waited patiently until I had a real source of income because I wanted to do it right. It had 105,000 miles on it, and the records show it only had one private owner after its initial two-year stint as an executive’s company car when it was new. It was lowered on H&R springs and bilstein shocks. It had an AWE Twin 1 catback exhaust (which sounds utterly fantastic; easily one of my favorite part about the car). It came with a center-vent-mounted AWE boost gauge, an AWE drive train stabilizer, and upgraded K04 turbos with a custom tune.
It didn’t come with as many receipts as I would have liked, but it was due for a timing belt service (which I was more than willing to tackle), so I only paid $10,400, including the price to have it delivered to my house from Chicago (I bought it without seeing it first haha; my friends and family thought I was insane, but I had done enough of my homework on these cars to thoroughly understand what i was getting myself into). It had a spotless carfax, a clean title, and it was in great shape all-around, so at the time that was about $2000 below what similar examples that already had the timing belt replaced were going for.
Since taking delivery of it, the car has been better than I even imagined. It always puts a smile on my face every day after work. It’s an absolute blast to drive on my commute, which is almost entirely 65mph highway — you can be cruising in sixth gear at 65mph at 2500rpm and just roll onto the throttle and you simply take the fuck off. The torque these things put down is glorious! The neck-snapping acceleration never fails to blow the minds of new passengers, and it grips like it is on rails. The best part is that from the outside, it is the opposite of the boy-racer’s WRX; it is elegant, and sophisticated looking, while remaining understated, and unassuming (to those that don’t know better), but at the same time it outperforms the bros and their big wings.
I am someone who prefers to do my own repair and maintenance because I know no one will do as careful, or thorough of a job as I would do on my own car. I have done a lot of stuff that wasn’t strictly necessary, often in the name of an upgrade, or preventative maintenance. The things I have done in my ownership of the car include:
Timing belt job (new water pump, new Kevlar belt, and replaced head gaskets and cam seals while I was in there); installed a cheap bluetooth receiver (it has no phone functionality (I don’t want that shit), just wireless music capability. I wired it into the CD changer port on the back of the stereo, so its totally invisible. It works great, and only cost me like $30 on Amazon); replaced all interior, trunk, and license plate lights with LED (just prefer the look of the whiter light, and it was a complete kit for less than $50 online; fun story: one time a passenger left a map light on and I didn’t notice, left the car parked like that for two days, and when I came out, she starter right up!); ignition coil update/conversion (these early-style ignition coils that come on the 2.7T and 1.8T are failure prone, and over $100 to replace. Many places sell upgrade kits to upgrade them to the newer, 2.0T style which are more durable, and can be had for less than $60); ECS Tuning Adjustable Suspension Coilover Sleeves (really cool item that slips over the bilstein shocks that the previous owner installed, and provides total height adjustment, just like a coilover set up. The car was too low for my taste, so I raised it up to where it looks best to me; I sensed that the H&R sport springs were pretty worn out so I replaced those with a new set of the same while I was installing the sleeves); Put Blizzaks on the stock wheels (with these, and quattro, you can get anywhere in the winter. It is absolutely ridiculous haha) and some decent summer rubber on a set of 18”x 9” BMW E46 M3 CSL replica wheels (a personal favorite wheel style of mine) for the rest of the year; H&R 25mm wheel spacers (which turned out to be necessary in order to have the M3 replica wheels fit over the massive, front, stock brake calipers. It was bigger than I wanted to go, but the ~5mm of poke has really grown on me, and gives the otherwise-understated vehicle a little bit of aggression to those in the know); AWE Stage III fueling kit (bought second-hand on the forums for less than $500, including the injectors and the GIAC-tuned ECU); Silicone boost hose kit (bought from ebay for $100, and it was the exact same number of plys, and thickness as my buddy’s $400 samco set); AWE-sourced DV1 Diverter Valves (very highly-rated, rebuildable diverter valves to replace the questionable ones that the previous owner installed); Veleo E-Code glass headlight housings, with the clear corner light reflector (gets rid of the horrid amber-colored refelctor; I personally feel that this mod alone makes the car look five years newer! I have definitely received more compliments on it since installing the E-Codes);
Wow, that got a lot lengthier than I intended. Sorry about that. I hope you are interested! That’s just about everything I’ve done to it since owning it though, aside from basic stuff like oil, and changing every filter on the car, and what have you. I’m currently in the process of doing new pads and rotors all around (I am going with ceramic pads, because those M3 replica wheels are a huge pain in the ass to clean haha, and I decided to give ECS Tuning’s geomet-coated rotors a shot because they look great, and according to a few reviews, they seem to really hold-up and fend off corrosion incredibly well); Oh, I have also replaced the rear wheel bearings because one of them started going around 120K miles, and I’m going to do the fronts while I’m doing the brake work this weekend, because one is starting to hum a little, and I’ll be in there anyway.
I plan on getting a set of AWE side-mount intercoolers soon, because the not-so-great stock ones are currently my bottleneck preventing me from making more power. The turbos seem to be holding up well (knock on wood) but the previous owner didn’t have receipts for the turbo work, so for all I know they could be the cheap, Chinese, ebay turbos that you hear about. If and when they do go, I plan on installing a set of Frankenturbos.
This wound up being WAY longer than I intended, but I suppose that just goes to show you how much I love this car. It truly is one of the best kept secrets around, in my opinion. Anyone who has heard of them is too scared to actually own one, but they don’t know what they are missing! I’m sure I missed some stuff, but if you get though all of this, let me know what you think. I’d love to hear all about your example, and I’d be happy to answer any specific questions you might have.

Thanks! I’ll be looking for an exhaust system pretty soon, nothing too loud though as I don’t want loud exhaust tickets haha.

08/25/2015 at 13:18 | 0 |
Wow! Thanks so much for all the information, haha. That actually really helped, the length was perfect!
I’m looking into wheels currently, but a lot of them require spacers or just plain old don’t fit 2.7t equipped vehicles which makes finding good wheels pretty hard. I was thinking about C5 Rs6 5 spoke wheels but from what I’ve told, they don’t fit.
I’d also like to upgrade to k04 turbos if the PO had not done that already, I’ve still got to do a little searching around on what the owner has and hasn’t done to the car. There are a few service records, but nothing too drastic. My car is right around the same mileage that you started with and I hope to not have that much maintenance to catch up on, but I’m down for whatever this car throws my way.
But as far as reliability goes, what are some “must do’s” that you would recommend?
Again, thanks for the write up! It was very insightful.

I’m glad you found that helpful.
First, let me start by saying nice find! The car looks super clean, and while I generally dislike tan colored interiors, my one exception to that rule is when they are paired with a nice dark green. It looks great.
To answer your question, I recommend that you do the timing belt service if you aren’t absolutely certain that it was done before, for obvious reasons. From what I recall, the later 2.7T’s called for it to be replaced at 106,000 miles, which is why my car was fairly inexpensive at 105,000 miles. I don’t know if you’ll be doing your own work, but if you will be, it really wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated. Just take your time, follow a good DIY write up/set of instructions, and take lots of pictures as you take things apart, so that you don’t have trouble remembering how things go together. It is wise to do the valve cover gaskets and cam seals at this time as well, since you already have them relatively exposed and they aren’t very time-consuming.
Other things that I would strongly recommend are the 2.0T coil conversion upgrade. This upgrade is actually beneficial in two ways; it replaces the failure-prone ignition coils from these older engines with the newer, less-expensive design, but it also deletes your ignition control modules (ICMs) which are also a cause CEL-related headaches (the newer coils make the need for the control modules obsolete). Two birds with one stone. I got a conversion kit from Integrated Engineering that came with some nice-looking anodized aluminum adapter plates that can add a little flash to your engine bay. The install was pretty straight forward (just make sure your solder connections are good and thorough). I haven’t had any problems with the ignition system since.
Honestly, other than that there aren’t too many “must-do” items in my opinion. Personally, I would say that you are depriving yourself of a wonderful aural experience by not upgrading the exhaust system to the best one that you can afford. I have never heard a turbocharged engine sound so good in my life. Plus, it is required for any serious modifications that you may want to do down the road. So that is a must-do in my book, but you may feel differently.
I will say that a boost gauge and a Ross Tech. (or similar) VAG COM link are absolutely vital tools to diagnosing problems early and easily. I strongly recommend that you get those if you don’t already have them as well.
As for wheel choices (as well as learning more about literally ANYTHING else related to the car), scour the forums for threads related to the topic. If you know how to use google effectively, you will find that starting nearly any search with “C5 A6 ____” as that tends to filter the results down to forum-based results. The forums will be your best friend when it comes to diagnosing issues, or finding DIY guides for repairs and maintenance.

So I am total nerd about all things cars (as indicated by my frequent, and long-standing presence on Jalopnik), and I have put a lot of thought into the nomenclature of various turbocharger systems. Here me out;
Currently, I am aware of no set of rigid rules that define which kind of system is which, and I find the names that manufacturers do use to be a bit ambiguous. Take, for example, Audi’s Biturbo system on this lovely motor in question. “Bi” means two, and in this case it refers to two identical turbos doing the same job, but for different banks of cylinders (and opens the door for jokes about your turbos sexual orientation). “Twin” implies identical (I understand that fraternal twins are a thing, but lets be honest with ourselves: twin implies identical), but, oftentimes it is used to refer to a sequential setup, like in the FD RX-7. And “sequential” is just hardly ever used by non-technical types.
So, to help eliminate this confusion surrounding this most-important of topics, I propose that we start using “Biturbo” as a catch-all name for any two-turbocharger system; “Sequential turbo” should be reserved for systems where the turbos come on in sequence, such as the FD RX-7; and “twin turbo” should be reserved for setups like ours, where there are two, twin, turbochargers, that are functionally identical, but work on two separate banks of cylinders. I believe this proposition would eliminate a lot of the confusion surrounding turbocharger systems. Plus, we as 2.7T owners benefit here because in addition to being less ambiguous, it also sounds infinitely cooler to say “twin turbo” than it does to say “bi turbo.”
So what do you think? Am I a visionary? Am I on to something? Or do you think I’m just on something, for putting this much thought into this, of all topics?

Thanks!
The last timing belt service was at around 60k, so I may as well have to do that soon.
I’ve got a VAG Com already, so that’s good hah.

Also, think you could recommend an inexpensive exhaust system, preferably under $1,000?

haha I had one for a few years, sold it for the taco. I’ll be back in 4 rings soon though

Well, I am a big fan of the one on my car, but that’s a B5 S4. I assume it is a different layout for your vehicle, but I am sure there are options out there.
Here is a link to some vendor selling the one I have on my car, to give you an idea: http://exaltmotorsports.com/i-157175-awe-t…
And here is a link to a decent sound clip of it.
I like how agressive it sounds under WOT, but how understated it can be when you’re cruising through your neighborhood. Also, I do a lot of highway driving, and there is no monotonous drone at highway speeds in sixth gear, so that is an important consideration as well.

Sounds like a V8! I’ll look into it, thanks.
Also, what are some trouble symptoms that the turbos might be going out?

Most typically, turbo failure is accompanied by an ungodly wailing/screeching sound that you couldn’t ignore if you wanted to. There are plenty of videos of this noise online, as well as some of the other modes of failure that are somewhat less obvious. Another common sign that they are very close to going, or already gone, is billowing blueish/white smoke pouring from your exhaust (this is caused by excessive oil burning). I have yet to actually experience one firsthand (knock on wood haha), so I only know what I have learned on YouTube and the forums. I would recommend doing some research on the topic; apparently there are several ways they can fail, some of which are much less obvious than the wailing/screeching that is somewhat common.

Ok, thanks haha. I’ll probably know when they’re going out if they do. Which they hopefully won’t.
